Lars Schumann is a Research Computer Specialist and lab manager at the University of Michigan 3D Lab in the Duderstadt Center. He is a primary resource for students, faculty and staff, with whom he collaborates on projects to visualize information in new and exciting ways.
Lars received the degree "Diplom-Informatiker" (comparable to M.S.) in Computer Science, specializing in computer graphics and simulation, from the University of Magdeburg, Germany, in 1997. From 1997 to 1999, he was a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Michigan Virtual Reality Laboratory. During this time, he worked on a variety of virtual reality projects, such as the "Detroit Midfield Terminal Project", the "Medical Readiness Trainer" (honored with the Year 2000 Computerworld Smithsonian Award), the world's first "Virtual Football Trainer", and others.
Since 1999 Lars has worked for the UM3D Lab, supporting faculty and students. He sets up and creates content for immersive environments, including the CAVE. He has conducted user requirement studies and human subject tests and programmed for large, multi-year projects including "Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation" and "Virtual Disaster Simulator". Data visualization and graphics programming are Lars' primary expertise; however, he also enjoys web development and database management.
